Portugal-based design studio Humana were recently invited by Everpress to design a t-shirt for the International Day of Clean Air. Since day one, Humana have been rooted in social projects and have set foundations of focusing on material and social sustainability, and bringing design into everybody’s reach. Thus, they decided to write a blog post that could be used as part of their t-shirt design, as what’s a better way to spread a message than wearing it? Check out the text of their vision on how to help fight for cleaner air below:
Air is life, but how often do you stop to think about how important it really is? As a challenge to remind you of this, we dare you to read a few paragraphs while holding your breath. (only do this if you feel comfortable and never put your health at risk). We all know air shouldn’t be as polluted and damaging as it is now. Starting with small changes – without being afraid of imperfection, making it a personal matter, and being kind to nature and others – can go a long way in our fight for cleaner air.
Embracing imperfection is a key part of taking action. Our culture teaches us to aim for perfection – to find the perfect job, to have a perfect family and house, and find the perfect solutions. However, in the pursuit of perfection, we often become anxious and end up doing nothing. Start somewhere and support causes even if they’re not perfect. This isn’t lowering the standards, it’s recognizing that imperfection is inevitable even when we do our best.
Make it personal! When we come into this world we have laws that we should follow, laws that were written long before institutional laws, and even before our existence as a species – the Laws of Nature. Self-preservation is the first law of nature, to cut off what may harm us. We humans don’t seem like we’re very good at this… Start by preserving the world around you – your community – small changes can make a difference. Remember what Lao Tzu once said – Great acts are made up of small deeds.
Be kind to nature. Sometimes we forget everything that the planet does for us, including being alive! Go to green areas more often to remind you of what we’re fighting for. Don’t take it for granted. Most of us live our day-to-day without even thinking about the impact that we’re having on our home. Take some time and reflect – hug a tree and stand for them.
For inspiration, think less is less and nothing more. Use less energy. Buy less. Own less, and don’t afford to have cheap things (when cheaper = less quality). Drive less, and when driving opt for more efficient vehicles. If possible, try to live closer to where you work. Go local with fewer but better choices. Eat healthy, unprocessed, and organic food with no fertilizing treatments.
Speak up, join the fight, spread the message, and be a champion! Pre-order the t-shirt here. Campaign ends 30/9/22.
