Interview with Dungarees + Squeegees Studio

posted by POP Members May 10, 2023

Who are you guys?

We are a small screenprint studio based in rural Shropshire. We design and print tshirts, totes, posters and stickers while also printing garments for other creatives. We often collaborate with artists and experiment with other print techniques like linocuts and cyanotypes.

How long have you been in this studio?

We moved here in 2021 after being offered some screen printing equipment from a print studio Ash used to work in. It’s just a really big shed that we have set up for printing. All the equipment just about fits, but we are hoping to get a bigger space soon!

Why do you want a bigger studio?

We love this space as it is where we began but we have quickly outgrown it and would love to upgrade some of our equipment. We currently manually print everything which is great, but very time consuming, so we have been looking at getting an automated machine which would require a bigger space. Long term, we would love to offer an open-access space for creatives to come, collaborate and experiment with screen printing and other processes.

What does your schedule look like?

Ash works in the studio part time and Joey on evenings and weekends. During the week, Joey is on the emails talking to creatives about the garments they want printing, and Ash is usually prepping screens and ink for the weekend. On Friday, Ash usually prints garments for artists, and then at the weekend we are either printing our own work or selling at fairs. We try our best to have regular breaks but it’s hard when we aren’t full time, yet.

What is your favourite part of the studio?

We both love the ink mixing station as it is speckled in ink and the wood we found in the ‘shed’ when we moved in, it actually has the original owner’s name sketched into the wood. It must be over 50 years old and we have given it another lease of life as our ink mixing table. We are hoping to use it in our next space or even make it into a wall hanging.

What do you prefer, printing for others or printing your own work?

For us, they go hand in hand. We love making things and selling them at fairs, through this we are able to meet amazing creative people and print their work. We both love sharing our passion for screen printing so I think our favorite thing is selling our work at fairs and meeting fellow creatives.
