Jakob&Tatze is a small screen printing studio based in Frankfurt am Main, founded in 2019 by graphic designer Nina Egli. Aside from running the print studio, Nina also works as a graphic designer. In her studio she hosts screen printing workshops for the public, as well offering small printing events for teams, friends or families, and private workshops for personal projects. Since COVID-19 caused the cancellation of all of her workshops, Nina has had more time to work on her online shop for which she creates products in collaboration with female designers and illustrators.
Whilst studying for a degree in Graphic Design at Grafikfachklasse, Nina was able to learn many different artistic techniques. It was here that she began to experiment with screen printing, and Nina started printing her own illustrations to sell at design markets. After four years of education, she has gone on to develop a career as a designer working at design studios. Since she was no longer able to make use of the workspace at her school, Nina started printing at home, although it began to get frustrating printing in her small flat. Getting bored of only printing her own designs, Nina wanted to bring together other people to show them the great technique she had learnt, as well as share inspiration. Thus, the idea to establish a screen print studio for workshops was born. Not able to find a place on her own that she liked in her hometown of Frankfurt, Jakob&Tatze is part of a shared space with other artists, and Nina hosts her many workshops from her huge table.
“I’m not a typical graphic designer who is full of design ideas all the time. It was a big game changer when I decided to accept this and to only design for my own when I’m in the mood to” explains Nina. It is for this reason that she loves to work together with other artists, and bring their ideas and illustrations to life by creating a printed product. She continues; “This inspires me way more, and I can concentrate on starting and having my own business – and on the printing process of course. Since I learned most of it on my own I love to get challenged by different designs, colours, textiles, and papers.”
Nina’s ideas develop as she creates; “I get inspired the most by working on something and figuring out solutions with the options I have“. With a passion for illustration, especially those from childrens’ books, Nina’s work often incorporates bright colours and fun people. She also finds great happiness from cycling trough cities, and gains lots of inspiration from the journeys she takes.
Dreaming of building up her business and getting a bigger workspace, Nina hopes to host a place for people to collaborate, and also have a shop and events space. “But for now I’d love to have more time to focus on my business and to share my screen printing skills” concludes the printmaker.
