Los Angeles-based screenprinting studio, Let Go Printing, were recently tasked with the challenging reproduction of Matthew Sairio‘s Untitled. Matthew Sairio is a Brooklyn-based fibre artist working in free-motion machine embroidery, applique, and upholstery.
The original piece is a 14″ x 14″ stretched canvas with freeform embroidery and fabric applique, and James Shaff and his team at Let Go Printing had to capture the nuances and loud colours of the textiles, while not going overboard on the colour count.
The solution was to use a technique familiar to textile printers called “simulated process”, and incorporate fluorescent inks into the print sequence. The final Trompe-l’œil is stunning while still maintaining a “printerly” quality. The printers also created some fun swatches in the margins of the print to reference for subsequent prints.
