Collaboration is a key component to the running of Upright Press, a small print shop in Columbus, OH. For Jess Hinshaw (the studio’s founder) and her team, every day involves working with clients to get things printed the way they want them. Thus, it was only natural for them to collaborate with one of their favourite artists, Jim Tucker, on an Upright Press shirt.
“The strange thing is that in our 8 years we’d never worked on a collaborative shirt design,” says Jess. As printers, most of their artwork revolves around their craft, and Jess and her team wanted to create a shirt that other printers would be able to relate to. Jim brought the idea of the cat pulling the squeegee and they worked together on choosing the amount of colours, locations, and sourcing the garment. Once he submitted the art the studio separated it and fine tuned it to get it to 5 colours. They had the garment custom made for this (they couldn’t find a natural long sleeve with a pocket).
There are a lot of print locations on this garment; 5 colour front, 5 colour back, 1 colour right sleeve, 1 colour left sleeve, and print over the pocket.
Jess concludes; “I couldn’t be happier with the art and the printing – and working together to further cement our relationship with this fantastic artist.”
