Ollie Cooper is a freelance lettering artist, creating murals, signage, and branding for a variety of clients including offices, small independent businesses, and brands. Designing art that transforms spaces, injects personality, and creates a talking point is central to his practice. He describes; “When designing my prints, I’m always sketching ideas down in notebooks or on my iPad. There are always favourites and those are the ones I’ll make into limited edition prints”.
The artist has just released 2 new limited edition Risograph prints; Hope Is Dope and Stay Golden. Ollie tells us; “I wanted to create a set of prints at the beginning of the year that were uplifting. It goes without saying that there’s a lot going on in the world currently and it has been a difficult time for many, so I wanted to create a print that gives you a reason to smile. Both in the use of colour and glitter, but also the messaging. It really is the simple concepts that have the biggest impact or resonate most with people. I also wanted to work in a larger format than the standard Risograph size, which was fun to do with this release.”
The idea for the designs was born after he roughly hashed out some ideas on some scrap paper. “It’s a very rough-and-ready process when I start out,” states the designer. From there, he refined both designs on Procreate on his iPad. As they were going to be Riso printed, Ollie split the colours into their own layers (similar to screen printing) making sure the transparencies were correct for the colours to blend where needed. They were then printed by a studio in Paris. “You always get these little charming imperfections with risograph, and I think it really adds to the overall look,” says Ollie.
Ollie hosted his first solo exhibition last year, and is hoping to develop ideas for his next show this year. He is looking forward to working on some larger formats and spaces, and creating custom murals for clients over the next few months.
Each design was printed in a run of 50 on A2 recycled stock with eco-friendly, soy-based inks. The first 10 of each were hand finished with glitter.
