Wen Ching Yiu (Krystine) participated in the deTour 2023 Hong Kong event where she held a printmaking workshop from 2–3 December. deTour is an annual design festival in Hong Kong that promotes different ways of crafting design futures, examining the interplay of design, craft, and technology. “New Know How” was the theme of the 2023 event.
Krystine’s workshop, The Playful Ways of Printmaking, aimed to share the happiness and playfulness of screen printing. Monoprint was chosen as a means to alter the public perception that printmaking is only about mass production. The workshop participants used a medium screen to paint and print their monoprint, exploring the concept of “self-portrait”; “What is our inner identity and impression we want to present to society? What makes us unique?”
By introducing screen printing and demonstrating the basics of monoprint, attendees were able to play with free-flowing brushstrokes, colours, and composition combined with their creativity. After printing with the squeegee on their chosen paper, they were able to take home a 20 × 23 cm artwork that records their inner thoughts manifested through art.
Krystine comments; “The interesting thing is that I discovered some participants are playing with the screen printing process: they may do playful ghost prints, using their hands to press the screen to create imprints rather than using squeegees, etc… Be playful to enjoy screen printing!”
