Somerset-based screen printer and Verified People of Print Member Hannah Carvell is stepping slightly outside her usual style with a new series of playful CMYK screen prints.
Launching with Googly Eyes and soon expanding into a run of mini weather-inspired pieces, the series leans into clouds, sunshine and exaggerated eyes that feel knowingly silly. It is bright, graphic and intentionally joyful. A reminder that print can be light-hearted without losing craft.
Created in her own screen printing studio in Somerset, the works explore CMYK layering as both technical experiment and visual play. By building imagery through cyan, magenta, yellow and black, Carvell pushes her colour palette into new territory while keeping her signature love of vibrancy intact.

“When it’s dark and rainy and the news feels just as gloomy, I wanted to make something that felt like a small burst of light,” she explains. “These prints are about bringing a bit of sunshine into the room, even if it’s grey outside.”
Already a long-time fan of the humble googly eye, Carvell began sketching clouds and abstract shapes inspired by summer skies. The eyes quickly found their way in, transforming simple forms into characters with personality. The result is a series that sits somewhere between graphic design experiment and playful visual commentary.
“I love how a pair of eyes can completely shift the mood of an image. It turns a cloud into a character, a shape into something with attitude. It’s silly, but that’s the point.”

The CMYK process adds another layer of depth. Rather than relying on flat blocks of colour, the prints build through overlays and subtle shifts in tone. The familiar four-colour system becomes a tool for experimentation, allowing Carvell to explore how limited palettes can still feel expansive and alive.
“I’m happiest when I’m screen printing and playing with bright colour combinations. CMYK felt like a new way to challenge myself while still keeping that joy. Layering inks and seeing what happens is pure magic.”
More designs are already in development, with additional weather-themed prints set to follow. Sunshine, shifting skies and more mischievous eyes will continue the thread, offering small moments of levity for the wall.
Working alongside an ever-growing studio “team” of visiting pets, including three small dogs, one eccentric cat and a handful of ducklings and chicks, Carvell approaches printmaking with warmth and humour. It shows in the work. These prints are not trying to be heavy. They are here to lift the mood.
In uncertain times, sometimes that is exactly what we need.
