As convenient and efficient as email is, nothing beats the pleasure of post. This Saturday (May 16th) House of Illustration at Kings Cross are hosting an exhibition and collaborative project aptly titled Pushing the Envelope.
Showcasing over 138 different postal masterpieces to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the worlds first postage stamp – the Penny Black; the collaboration with Hereford College of Arts perfectly marks the occasion.
An international array of artists and illustrators created embellished envelopes using an eclectic mix of mediums. From collage, to paint, to typographic designs, each artist made their mark on the back of an envelope and sent it to London.
Having made their way from across the globe, from Europe, Japan, and the USA and even as far as Australia. They show that pen and paper still have an unrivalled aesthetic appeal in an age of digital communication.
Before the opening at House of Illustration, the exhibition can be seen at Hereford College of Arts from the 17th April 1st May, it will also be showing at the Hay Festival from 21st 31st May.
