Pattern is as old as time. The birth of pattern can probably be traced back throughout the earliest remnants of Earth’s history. It appears in ways we may not perceive, can be found everywhere in nature, and is the basis for many non-figural characteristics of decorative culture around the world. Recently, London-based creative studio, research platform, and online pattern image archive Patternity have announced their latest project, ‘Patternity: A New Way of Seeing’, which is set to inspire and pave the way for design in the future.
‘Patternity: A New Way of Seeing’ serves as a compendium of useful information on all facets of pattern design, decoration, and inspiration. The book chronicles the psychology behind why pattern is so important, offering an entirely new way of viewing the world around us through a fascinating collection of optically absorbing art, design, and photography.
Set up by art director Anna Murray and surface designer Grace Winteringham, ‘Patternity’ has continued to gain international attention and worldwide recognition since its establishment in 2009. This new publication bridges the gap between design and science, man-made technology and nature, and even past and present.
You might think that it is impossible to offer anything like an exploration of the art of pattern within the limits of one publication. But for this project, Murray and Winteringham have managed to put together a uniquely curated, 224-page hardback that is imbued with unexpectedness and surprise. The book features a selection of thoughtful essays and images from fashion and design to the natural world.
‘Patternity: A New Way of Seeing’ is definitely a must-read for anyone interested in design experimentation. It is an enlightened approach to exploring the inspirational power of pattern very insightful, thought-provoking, and highly original.
The book will be released on Thursday 3rd September 2015 and is published by Conran Octopus.
