Girls Exhibition by Martina Paukova

On the 8th of February, The Book Club in Shoreditch presents Girls, an exhibition that confronts female stereotypes in a world which encourages girls to be glamorous, to pose and perform at all times. After studying illustration at Camberwell College of art, Paukova recently moved to Berlin where she is a celebrated illustrator for clients such as Apple, Pull&Bear, Converse, Google, Guardian, Vans or New York Times.

Girls is her first major London-based exhibition and consists of a collection of images celebrating the beauty in the relaxed, domestic, and off-duty female form where women are truly themselves. Her illustrated girls feel familiar, as you see them lying, sitting, standing or kneeling, with an occasional laptop, phone or a man thrown in. Plants and steaming coffee cups are compulsory. Girls are lanky and awkward, set in Paukova’s staple geometric domestic environments. In these images Paukova repeatedly both celebrates and mocks the daily and the banal; light and humorous mood with a sporadic darker streak is a must.

Where does this muse stem from you may ask? Martina Paukova was born in Slovakia where she studied politics which could possibly explain her political statue on the female sex in our current world. Attracted to all things pictorial she moved to London to study graphic design followed by illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. Currently, she lives and works in Berlin, where she spends her time drawing people and their awkward people’s poses with the main focus being the domestic and the everyday.
