Practicing as a Senior Lecturer the Graphic Design and Illustration BA Hons course at the Liverpool School of Art and Design ( LJMU), New People of Print member Jonathan Spencer is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to practice, explore and teach his love of design. Teaching is perhaps the most important aspect of his process, as the students help enliven his own practice and help to keep his work current.
Jonathan enjoys a broad range of practical mediums such as digital and traditional print, laser cutting, woodworking and anything which allows him to express his love of making. His DIY approach even extends to the tools that he hand-crafts himself, for instance; book presses, rulers and folding tools. His passion for marrying processes to strong concepts to explore themes is shown frequently throughout his work. “I believe that the approach of thinking through making is a vital part of the creative process and so constantly update my knowledge of processes and expand my skill set to underpin this”.
Typically you can find Jonathan playing with the courses two colour risograph machine exploring colour overprints or rendering patterns. Like us, his love for print is the immutable nature of ink on paper, exploring different print technologies to achieve the huge, beautiful variety of its effects. “The risograph printing process presents an immediate realisation of ideas and throws in new notions – unexpected overlays or interactions that bring work to life. My students too love this, and I fear that our two machines might even be loved more than us tutors, certainly the case for the fluorescent inks!”.
