Heidi Rutherford-Smith is a Liverpool based designer and maker with a passion for tactile work, as she loves producing pieces that can be touched, felt and interacted with. Her practice involves combining methods of printmaking to produce publications, handmade books and prints which all have a strong concept behind them.

This is demonstrated in one of her most recent projects; a risograph printed book that has been bolted together. The project aims to show how everyday or graphic objects have been created, by taking them apart. In this instance the audience are free to deconstruct and reassemble the book in any order they wish.

Heidi’s processes are experimental and bold with pops of colour. She loves how use of colour can give a strong identity to a project. Experimenting is of huge importance to Heidi as she realises the significance of having fun while still producing a beautifully crafted, well thought out piece of work.

By using print methods such as risograph, screen printing and reprographics, she is able to play with the idea that you can never know the exact outcome, whether that be slight changes in alignment or colours merging together. Heidi likes to think of these as ‘Happy Accidents’ and something that will always add character to a piece of work.
