Cycling is a recurring theme for Eliza Southwood; a screen printer based in North London and Northern Spain. A former architect who turned to printmaking around a decade ago, Eliza explores colour and contrast in the cycling aesthetic, the iconic cycling races and the diverse landscapes offered up by cycling as a topic. As well as her ongoing cycling projects, Eliza also depicts other subjects. She is currently working on a series of textured screen prints based on her acrylic paintings of Northern Spain, a little-known remote part of the country where she lives for half the year. She is also working on a series of abstract linocuts under the name of her alter-ego, Red Girling. As Red, she returns to her interest in architecture, particularly Brutalism (she studied architecture under Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein of Gillespie, Kidd and Coia). The linocuts will depict the essence of building at its most reductive level, with the intention to capture the texture and aesthetic of simple, distinct architectural forms.
