Chromakane, aka Jessie Cohen, is an illustrator and designer based in London. She has a background in graphic design, following the completion of a BA(Hons) Graphic Design at Norwich University of the Arts in 2013, and MA Design and Branding Strategy at Brunel University in 2014.
Jessie launched Chromakane at the start of 2020, with the ambition of taking her illustration ideas into print, textile and tattoo art. Her work is defined by her use of detailed and fluid blackwork illustrations, which explore our emotions, and connection to the outdoors. Having grown up between France and parts of Southeast Asia, Jessie’s own cultural background heavily influences her oriental aesthetic.
She begins each piece away from screen-based work, with a detailed pen and ink hand drawing in A5 or A4 format, combining pigment ink fine liners and marker pens. Next, Jessie edits each image digitally, and reproduces them to giclée print quality within her home studio setup.
As an independent maker, Jessie is always keen to discover new printing techniques to experiment with, and enjoys the hands-on, DIY nature of the process. She is also passionate about supporting and nurturing the diversity of her local creative communities. For Jessie, the most exciting part of the journey is being able to collaborate with other creatives, with each new project providing an opportunity for her to learn and grow her own practice.
