Cansu Topaloglu is an Istanbul-based, multi-disciplinary creative with a background in art, design and literary media. Highly experimental during her process, Cansu thrives on stepping out of her comfort zone, and seeks to find the correlation between materialism and the digital world through her work. Any material can be a starting point for a new piece of work; such as a scanner, microscope, plastic bag, or even slime. First, Cansu develops the raw material with little thought for the final concept, and decides where it could go as she creates. She blends and manipulates to create computer-generated abstract imagery, with the resulting artworks reflecting absurdity, boldness, and over-saturation.
While studying for an MA in Digital Media at the University of Sussex, Cansu developed an interest in video art under the inspiration of Nam June Paik. She has since gone on to create several experimental video art installations. In one of her works, Transparent Exposure, the artist seeks to capture the audience through the creation of an alternative dimension. The influence of nature and natural elements, including the sun and water, are clearly evident in the result. In the video, Cansu attempts to create a digital world where natural elements are twisted. She imitated a sunset by layering and printing on multiple transparent surfaces, and also made an A/V piece by putting liquids under a microscope which were then projected onto a surface.
Cansu is stimulated by the playful and vibrant spirit of pure and creative childhood, and always aims to be out of the ordinary. Interested in openly expressing her colourful and vibrant spirit, she has founded her online store brand, Cacu (juh-joo). Inspired by her flamboyant childhood fantasies, “Cacu” was her childhood nickname, and reflects how she saw the world as “electric neon” as a child. She has always been a maker; from selling illustrations to classmates, to transforming random items she finds at home into collages, animals, and toys. The once play-doh obsessed, introverted kid with a weird fantasy world, now fully enjoys helping other ever-creative children to find their voice.
When creating her brand, Cansu thought it would be great to not only create and share what she makes, but also positively influence others. Thus, she donates a proportion of her brand’s income to children’s charities and foundations. Her shop currently stocks her own printed works, however she is currently working on a new collection which will include clay earrings, printed t-shirts, and tote bags.
Alongside her brand, Cansu launched her own graphics studio, Enpitsu, earlier this year. She enjoys creating material works for clients which includes, posters, tote bags, packaging, and digital design. Cansu has been juggling all of her art and design skills, and continues to playfully experiment with both material and digital practices. Her most recent project to launch was Ol-kolektiv; a cyber community for young creatives to share and inspire together.
