Emily Woolford: Postcard Print Swap

posted by POP Members July 9, 2020

During lockdown, Derbyshire-based printmaker Emily Woolford decided to set herself and fellow printmakers a challenge, in the hope that it would get people making and keep them creative during a difficult time. Emily’s idea was to create a print on a postcard, send it off to another person, and receive another one in return. She decided to make it a swap so that people could connect with each other, even though it wasn’t possible to physically meet.

Emily was completely overwhelmed by the amount of people who asked to get involved, and was delighted to hear that people liked the idea.I’m so stunned at all of the prints that have been made, they are all so unique and incredibly beautiful” explains the printmaker.

Included in the swap is Emily’s own River Thames print, which is based on The Great Stink from the 1800’s. The postcard is her own response to the current pandemic, taking inspiration from history and that ways in which people have previously overcome crises. The piece has been printed on a page from The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens in order to also commemorate the 150th anniversary of his death this year.

Emily concludes; “I would like to thank every single printmaker who got involved. You all gave me something positive to look back on in the future when we talk about this horrific pandemic“.

Participants include: Emily Woolford, Avalon Oakes, Bernie Rutter, Jeremy James, Jemma Gunning, Montez, Ashleigh Norrie, Maria Malkova, Emma Jane NicolSarah Bissell, Judith HarveyLaura Boast, Sophie Gibson, David Cumming, Ann OngRobyn Drew, Kath Bell, and Anastasia Krasteleva
