One of the latest projects from Diego Miranda, a Chilean graphic designer and artist based in Barcelona, is an exciting collaboration with Colombian illustrator Diego Diaz. The collaboration culminated in a Risograph print, Tapeo vol.01, that celebrates goods time had in Barcelona.
The pair met at the Give a Print a Chance 2024 fair, held at PrintWorkers in the Gràcia neighborhood of Barcelona. Using this event as a spark, the duo set out to create a print that would pay tribute to going out with friends in the city. “The tapeo — the tradition of going out for tapas — is a custom that newcomers quickly pick up, especially if you’re an immigrant eager to meet new people and integrate into Barcelona’s social life,” explains Miranda.

Their tribute involved putting together a basic menu of the tapas and drinks you can find in most bars around the city: tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette), patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), and a Catalan classic, pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato); all accompanied by a good glass of red vermouth with an olive and a slice of orange. “It seemed like a perfect starting point — our ‘Tapeo Volume 01’,” says Miranda.

To combine the best of both of their styles, it was decided that Diaz would create the illustrations, and Miranda would design the print, applying a geometric structure to the layout to create a contrast between their two approaches.
Once Diaz had finished the illustrations, together they went through several design iterations while keeping his original layout, but something still didn’t quite fit. Miranda describes; “So we pushed it a bit further, reorganising the configuration of his illustration until we arrived at a mirrored composition — keeping all the original elements but moving them into a world where patterns, structures, and geometric forms coexist more harmoniously”. The resulting print immerses the viewer in the buzz of Barcelona, whilst offering a striking composition.
