Words That Sound Like Nothing but Mean Everything

posted by POP Members February 1, 2026

Manchester based designer Danielle Molyneux, working under the studio name Dotto, has launched Pop Talk, a collection of limited edition screen prints that turns everyday phrases into bold typographic artworks. Drawing from throwaway comments overheard in conversations with friends, family, and group chats, the series captures how casual language can quietly evolve into something more meaningful.

The Pop Talk collection features eight designs, including Sunk Cost, Phoenix Like, and Oh The Feelings. Each phrase is rooted in real dialogue, lifted from moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. In print form, these fragments of language become visual statements, balancing humour with emotional weight.

“Words sound light but they carry weight. They start as one thing, end as another. Jokes and observations become mantras or philosophies. We chant them, preach them. Live, laugh, love them (ha).”

The prints are screen printed by hand in three colours on Colorplan paper and produced in editions of ten. The process-driven nature of screen printing plays a key role in the work, allowing colour, texture, and repetition to reinforce the awkwardness and sincerity embedded in each phrase.

Molyneux describes her relationship with language as a form of collecting. “I collect words like souvenirs. From friends, family, even from strangers. Text conversations and WhatsApp groups. Delivered with a smirk and an eye roll. They take on new meaning and I run with them.”

Pop Talk marks the final body of work from a three-year immersive printmaking course at Hot Bed Press in Salford, where Molyneux specialised in screen printing. The experience offered a decisive shift away from screen-based design and toward physical making and repetition.

“This time was transformative. Space to step away from a computer to physically make. The gift of slowing down, trusting the process and building a practice.”

The collection launched as part of a group exhibition at Hot Bed Press Print Studio alongside eleven other artist printmakers and remains on display until February 7, 2026. Presented within a shared studio environment, the work sits among a wider community of print-led practices shaped by collaboration, learning, and material exploration.

Dotto operates as both a creative studio and an independent art space. Alongside client work in typography, lettering, branding, and design, the studio produces prints, editions, and original artwork. Based in Manchester and working globally, Molyneux’s practice moves fluidly between graphic design, printmaking, and cultural observation.

Pop Talk captures the way language circulates through everyday life, shifting between joke and truth, irony and sincerity. By isolating and amplifying these phrases through screen print, Molyneux gives physical form to words that might otherwise dissolve into the background.
