Check out a few awesome zines printed and designed by some of the talented members of our community. From family tales, to imaginary creatures, our members have turned an array of stories and ideas into printed matter.
David Wischer: BANDITS BANDITS is a 16-page Risograph art zine about David Wischer’s Dad being robbed at gunpoint by a man with tape on his face. David states; “My Dad passed away from cancer in June of 2022. Unlike myself, he didn’t keep many things, but a few months later we found a small box with some banking numbers, a couple of golf tees, and this newspaper article from 1960 describing the holdup. My Dad was always pretty unimpressed by his own greatness. I would have told this story 1,000 times. The absurdity of this story was a nice way to honor him with some levity.”
Wen Ching Yiu (Krystine): The Way Back Home This zine records Krystine’s way back home, from the university where she studied to her home in Hong Kong. She tells us; “They are far apart from each other, and the Tuen Mun Road between these two places always has traffic congestion. Therefore, I created this zine to show the chaotic but interesting way back home.” Krystine used cows as a metaphor to represent the Tuen Mun people; “Hongkongers would imagine that people living in Tuen Mun need to ride cows to go to main city places. Therefore transportation also becomes the juxtaposition with cows.” She continues; “Although the process of waiting back home is annoying, the scene behind the Road is poetic and stunning at the same time.”
Isabelle Lin: A Field Guide to Shell Cats Isabelle Lin made this accordeon zine on the occasion of the 2023 online Canzine Festival. She took inspiration from vintage field guides about local fauna and flora, but wanting a more whimsical twist on the theme, she created the little critters that are shell cats. The drawings were made in ink, the zine printed on a Giclee printer, and the booklet assembled by hand.
