TOC Publishing

TOC (The Other Collection) was founded on the belief that significant literature deserves exceptional craftsmanship. This philosophy is reflected in their meticulous production of letterpress editions, where quality and exclusivity take centre stage. Through TOC, designers Erik Spiekermann and Susanna Dulkinys combine the advances of modern typography with the quality and artisanship of centuries-old book printing.

At a time when most reading has become a fleeting experience due to the rise of online platforms and digital reading devices, and where it may seem that knowledge and wisdom are at our fingertips, TOC have created a more permanent space for important thoughts and ideas, by lodging them in handsomely printed books. Selecting works that align with their commitment to quality and literary significance, TOC’s publishing output centres on 21st-century literature, highlighting contemporary voices and narratives, and publications that will form the canon of the future. This approach is informed by Richard Sennett’s work on craftsmanship; “the pursuit of excellence for its own sake”. TOC focus on honoring the essence of a text by transforming it into typography, material, and artwork, all whilst respecting the book as a centuries-old medium. Birgit Schmitz, TOC’s publisher tells us; “We believe in the power of the book as a vessel for making ideas visible, where the act of holding a physical object influences how we comprehend and connect with its content.”

Their catalogue thus far includes works by authors such as Deborah Levy, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, John Banville, and Jonathan Safran Foer – literature that all offer insight, spark reflection, and provide a sense of orientation. These selections are further guided by personal taste, and a belief that their books should explore questions relevant to today’s readers. All of TOC’ publications are united by their exploration of themes centered around change and transformation in various forms.

Birgit states; “Our books are selected to find and give answers to timeless questions, to offer the possibility for a deeper understanding of the world around us. Some of our authors have won literary prizes, some have written bestsellers. They are writers, artists, designers, illustrators, scientists, who have a singular perspective on the world.”

TOC specialise in letterpress printing, a traditional technique where inked type is pressed onto high-quality paper, creating a tactile, visually striking impression. Before TOC’s inception, legendary designer and typographer Erik Spiekermann devoted considerable thought to how the quality of letterpress printing could be achieved without the limitations of lead type and traditional methods. This led him to develop a groundbreaking digital-analogue process, creating a laser setter capable of producing polymer plates large enough for eight book pages. Perfecting this technique on a Heidelberger Cylinder press took several years, a process he aptly describes as “hacking Gutenberg”.

Their process of creation begins with a modern typographic layout, using fonts designed by emerging type designers. The design data is then transferred directly onto polymer plates using a laser setter. These plates are mounted on their 1954 Heidelberg Cylinder press, where exceptional precision is required to achieve a delicate impression on the paper while maintaining sharp, crisp type. Each book is then sewn-bound, and includes a linen-covered cardboard cover with vibrant endpapers. The book jacket, printed on the exquisite Gmund Cotton paper, further enhances the tactile experience that’s at TOC’s heart, emphasising craftsmanship in every detail. Each edition is limited in number, signed by the author, and crafted with attention to detail, reflecting their commitment to producing exceptional books.

Currently, TOC are working on a project that they describe as “very close to our hearts”. Birgit tells us; “Since the founding of TOC, we have aspired to publish a book by George Saunders, whose writing is distinguished by extraordinary craftsmanship while simultaneously redefining genre boundaries. His short story collection *Tenth of December* has received multiple awards, including the Folio Prize, and has been featured on several lists of the best books of the 21st century.” TOC’s edition of Saunders’ work will be released in spring 2025.

Infinitely passionate about celebrating and preserving contemporary literature through traditional printing methods, TOC are looking forward to collaborating with other publishers and growing their own collection this year. Their forging of craftsmanship and meaningful storytelling is sure to continually resonate with readers and the publishing community alike.
