Cait Earnshaw | Deeper, Beneath the Surface Exhibition

posted by POP Members May 7, 2025

Launching at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham, South Yorkshire on May 13th is an exciting exhibition from artist and printmaker Cait Earnshaw. Created as part of her residency at the house, the show is a response and reinterpretation to Beneath the SurfaceWentworth Woodhouse’s biggest exhibition to date which brought together paintings by George Stubbs alongside works by nine contemporary artists from the UK and Europe, living and working today.

The original exhibition compared and contrasted the historical with the contemporary, finding connections and conversations between works of art. As Stubbs looked deeper into the bodies of horses to find out how muscle, bone, and sinew shaped their anatomies, the contemporary artists went ‘beneath the surface’ in other ways.

Stubbs spent ‘some time’ at Wentworth Woodhouse in 1762, occupying a role that could be seen as similar to artists in residence that occupy contemporary arts spaces today. During his time at Wentworth Woodhouse he produced paintings that are recognised as being hugely significant in the history of English art, including the famous Whistlejacket. Wentworth Woodhouse wanted to celebrate Stubbs as a local hero and reinforce that really great art has been made in Rotherham — and continues to do so today.

Over 300 years since Stubbs’ time at Wentworth Woodhouse, Cait was invited to serve as their latest young artist in residence as part of their ongoing programme. This residency involved a collaboration with students from Wales High School, for which new work was created and curated to produce a new exhibition, Deeper, Beneath the Surface.

Through a series of workshops and interviews, Cait and her students formed a response to Beneath the Surface. The exhibited works explore language, connection, and dialogue, using words, humour, and conversation. By experimenting with typewritten pieces, letterpress printing, and the cut-up technique among other analogue processes, Cait also delves into the relationship between new and old, creating a new conversation between past and present, as in Beneath the Surface.
