Fragments II: An Online Exhibition by Jemma Gunning and Mark Lippett

posted by POP Members June 9, 2020

First exhibiting together in 2019, in a joint show entitled Fragments, printmaker Jemma Gunning and artist Mark Lippett are returning for round two, Fragments II.  The second show which is an extension of their first showcases the harmonious work of the duo side-by-side. With the global pandemic their plans to host the show were on hold, yet they decided that an online exhibition would be a great place to continue sharing their work and stories during these strange times, providing the opportunity to find inspiration amongst the decay. The exhibition will go live on the 15th of June and will run until the end of the year.

The online exhibition will feature past work that is juxtaposed with a diverse range of new drawings, paintings and original prints that quietly celebrate the beauty found amongst the remnants of the past. Jemma and Mark’s work collectively explores themes of dereliction, abandonment and the loss of industry. Featuring drawings, paintings, and printmaking, the exhibited works illustrate a quiet and unpopulated environment where nature has reclaimed it’s space. “We are left with remnants from another time and traces of human activity, which will eventually disappear to be replaced with something new” describes Jemma.

Jemma’s practice explores landscape, documents significant social and historical places in transient states, and displays decaying architectural surfaces that provide a glimpse to the past. Her use of traditional printmaking processes supports her vision in the subjects that she depicts. Textures and marks are important to her practice as they enable Jemma to express what she witnesses in the urban landscape. The etching process requires an enforced decay, whereby the acid bites into the copper plate, reflecting the natural decay of the structures that she records. By documenting crumbling forms, Jemma hopes to make society more aware of their direct environment, and the history that we are losing from urban expansion and redevelopments. “I hope people will slow down and properly consider subjects that too many of us would normally walk straight past and ignore” explains the printmaker.

Mark is an award winning Fine Artist from Staffordshire in the West Midlands. He is most recognised for his architectural work that depicts abandoned buildings, which have been exhibited across the UK in a number of solo and group shows. His atmospheric drawings and paintings illustrate quiet and unpopulated landscapes, both urban and natural. Themes of urban decay, solitude and stillness run throughout his work. Mark’s practice predominantly incorporates drawing and painting, defining his detailed and expressive style. He uses a wide variety of mark making techniques in different mediums, favouring pencils and acrylic paint.

Jemma and Mark will be hosting a Zoom artist talk at 6pm on 15/6/20. To join, get in touch with jemma_gunning@hotmail.co.uk for the ID and password.
