Inspired by contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, Jill & Gill’s latest collection, Obsessive, is bold and colourful. The duo launched their apparel collection back in July 2018, with their fashion line going from strength to strength. All garments are made with respect meeting demanding ethical standards, and created with an ethos of exclusivity and craftsmanship.
Yayoi Kusama is an incredible artist whose career spans over 70 years. Inspired by Yayoi’s creativity, Jill & Gill saw their latest collection as a opportunity to begin blurring their practice as fine artists with their work as garment designers. By introducing more colour, layers and texture to their wearable pieces, the duo softened the boundary between art and fashion, illustrating their belief that both are equal in status.
This collection was not only an opportunity to push their creative boundaries and their understanding of garment development and design, but also provided the chance to collaborate with a fellow Dublin based creative, Worthy Design Studio. As part of this collaboration they created the Iconic Bomber; a jacket designed, screenprinted and made in Dublin from ethically sourced, organic Japanese denim.
The Ready to Wear collection is hand-printed on vegan, organic cotton t-shirts. Their sweaters include 15% recycled polyester from plastic water bottles and feature sections of illustration and design from their Iconic Bomber.
As a brand moving through the fashion world the duo encourage their customers to make a conscious investment in their apparel. “When it comes down to the design, it’s more than just a t-shirt or a sweater, it’s a celebration through print, illustration and style uniquely illustrated and hand printed in Dublin” state the designers.
You can view of the Iconic Bomber and the rest of the collection from Aug 28th until early October as part of Sceal at Kilkenny Design in Dublin and Galway.
