In a significant shift within the art world, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has announced Christophe Cherix as its incoming director, succeeding Glenn D. Lowry, who has helmed the institution since 1995. Cherix, originally from Switzerland, has been an integral part of MoMA since 2007, notably serving as the chief curator of drawings and prints.

During his tenure, Cherix has curated several acclaimed exhibitions, including the 2023 “ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN,” the 2018 “Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Institutions,” and the 2015 “Yoko Ono: One Woman Show.” His efforts have significantly enriched MoMA’s collection through the acquisition of major works and archives.

The appointment was unanimously approved by MoMA’s board of trustees. Marie-Josée Kravis, the board’s chair, praised Cherix’s “brilliant curatorial leadership in modern and contemporary art” and his “deep insight and passion for MoMA’s collection.”

Expressing his vision for the museum’s future, Cherix stated, “MoMA has long been a leader in embracing new forms of expression, amplifying the voices of artists from around the globe, and engaging the broadest audiences onsite and online.” As the museum approaches its centennial … he emphasised his commitment to supporting MoMA’s staff and ensuring the institution remains at the forefront of contemporary art discourse.

Cherix is set to assume his new role in September, marking a new chapter for MoMA as it continues to evolve and inspire under his leadership.
