Penguin Random House Launches Support for Independent Bookshops

posted by Marcroy February 10, 2026

Independent bookshops across the UK are set to receive a significant boost, as Penguin Random House announces a major new funding initiative aimed at inspiring young readers during the National Year of Reading.

The Penguin Children’s Bookshop Grant 2026 will make up to £150,000 available to independent bookshops, supporting creative projects that encourage children and young people to discover books they love, feel connected to their local community, and build a lifelong relationship with reading.

The initiative was unveiled at the Penguin Indie Bookseller Evening, with a clear focus on empowering bookshops to develop ideas that bring reading to life in imaginative and inclusive ways. From playful in-store spaces and eye-catching window displays to author events, reading clubs and school partnerships, the grant is designed to help bookshops expand the vital role they already play in their communities.

Eligible bookshops can apply for funding ranging from £1,500 to £5,000, with the aim of turning small but powerful ideas into meaningful programmes that engage young readers.

Francesca Dow, Managing Director of Penguin Random House Children’s, highlighted the importance of independent bookshops in shaping early reading experiences. She emphasised that bookshops are often where children first discover stories that spark their imagination, from picture books through to Young Adult fiction, and praised booksellers for their creativity, passion and deep connection to local audiences.

The grant, she explained, is intended to support and amplify this work, encouraging fresh approaches to reaching young readers while strengthening the cultural and social impact of independent bookshops across the UK.

Applications for the Penguin Children’s Bookshop Grant 2026 are now open, with further details available via Penguin Random House.
