The Gruffalo Returns: Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler Reunite for New Adventure

posted by Marcroy May 1, 2025

More than two decades after enchanting readers with The Gruffalo (1999) and its sequel The Gruffalo’s Child (2004), the acclaimed duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler are set to revisit the deep dark wood. Their new, yet-to-be-titled picture book is scheduled for release in September 2026, promising to reintroduce beloved characters in a fresh narrative

This collaboration marks the first new Gruffalo story in over 20 years. The original books have achieved remarkable success, with The Gruffalo selling 3.2 million copies and The Gruffalo’s Child 2.1 million copies to date.

Donaldson revealed that the concept for the new story had been conceived long ago but remained undeveloped. It was a recent campaign by the National Literacy Trust (NLT), which utilised the original books to promote reading, that inspired her to revisit and complete the idea.

Initially hesitant about returning to the Gruffalo universe, Scheffler was persuaded by Donaldson’s compelling new manuscript. Their partnership, which began in 1993 with A Squash and a Squeeze, has since produced over 30 books, solidifying their status in children’s literature.

The original Gruffalo story, inspired by a Chinese folk tale, follows a clever mouse who invents a fearsome creature to outwit predators, only to encounter the real Gruffalo. Its success has led to translations into over 80 languages, stage adaptations, an Academy Award-nominated animated film, and various merchandise.

The upcoming book’s release will coincide with an international children’s reading campaign led by Macmillan and the NLT, aiming to address the decline in children’s reading enjoyment. This initiative underscores the enduring impact of Donaldson and Scheffler’s work in fostering a love for storytelling among young readers.

As anticipation builds for this new installment, fans can look forward to another engaging journey into the imaginative world crafted by Donaldson and Scheffler.
