Working with an interesting cyanotype print process is Barcelona-based small design studio, Kind of Cyan. Run by creative duo Ryan and Natalia, they print images of nature, focusing on planets, the moon, other parts of our solar system capturing beautiful textures through the print process they experiment with.
The cyanotype print process is one of the first photographic processes ever to be developed: first, you coat high-quality watercolour paper with a light-sensitive emulsion; then, the print is exposed in direct sunlight, making a contact print with a large negative; and finally, the print is washed to stop the chemical reaction and fix the image on to the paper. Naturally, like most handmade prints, they differ from one another. In this case, since they’re printed at different times of the day and different days in the year, the sun always makes a slightly different exposure, making each print unique!
Recently, these guys were given first prize in the ArtsFAD awards, one of the most important awards in Spain which recognizes the best emerging design products of the year. The judges awarded them the prize for “the boldness of recovering an old technique without nostalgia.”
We loved their prints so much, we added them to our curated marketplace Department Store. Shop their collection below!
