Founded by Katerina Papaphilotheou, a specialist in graphic design and letterpress printing, Letterpressed is a studio located in the heart of the old town in Limassol, Cyprus.
Katerina studied Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins where she mainly concentrated on editorial design. She was introduced to letterpress printing during the course, and was immediately impressed. However, she tells us; “I never thought it could be anything that I could work on back home in Cyprus”. She continues; “Coming back and working as a designer for a couple of years, I felt that graphic design, especially in Cyprus which has a limited market, wasn’t for me. This realisation, along with the fact that I was trying to find a local printer to print letterpress and couldn’t find one, was the beginning of Letterpressed.”
Thus, Katerina set out to find a press of her own, and re-introduce letterpress to the market. She comments; “I wanted to revive the art of letterpress, to highlight the craftsmanship behind it, and salvage any old typographical equipment in the process.” She eventually found two letterpress machines; a Nebiolo table top press (“which funnily enough was thrown in a garden shed next to my house”), and an 1890’s Golding Jobber. Both were restored with a lot of care and expense, and she now uses them to print stationery that she designs such as notebooks, annual calendars, and sarcastic greetings cards.
Aside from printing her own stationery, Katerina continues to work as a designer creating high-end business cards and wedding invitations, which she outsources to trusted associates for the printing part.
She concludes; “The idea behind my work is to design aesthetically modern and clean work, which are then printed on 100-year-old machines. I love the idea of merging the old with the new.”
