Victoria Ng is colour fanatic, and print, design, and branding obsessee, dedicated to creating work that will spark joy, encourage change in human behaviours, and ignite conversations around our emotional wellbeing.
Graduating with a Bachelors in Visual Communication at University of Technology, Sydney in 2019, Victoria moved to Manchester, UK, to pursue a Masters in Digital Experience Design at Hyper Island. It was during this time that she had the opportunity to freely explore her passion and curiosity around emotions, leading her to write her dissertation on Designing for Emotional Resilience.
Currently working full time at an ed-tech company as a product designer, Victoria aims to design experiences that can enhance students’ learning ability and enjoyment. “Making a systemic change in the education system has been a long personal motivation of mine, especially in terms of teaching and developing students emotional intelligence and awareness,” says the designer.
She also leads a variety of freelance projects, working on product, branding, and graphic design; “In the most humble way possible, I am fairly selective with these projects as it is imperative for me to work on projects that embed deep meaning and desire for impactful changes”. For this reason, Victoria likes to call herself an “emotional designer”; always designing with human emotions in mind and with a keen interest in emotional wellbeing. In her spare time, she also creates her own design briefs with a similar collective aim of creating “sophisticated designs that can evoke an emotional and experiential response”. Therefore, her work varies from digital product design, through to illustrations and prints, often expressed through typography and shapes.
Victoria’s working process always starts with a sketchbook; “For me, sketching is really important, it helps free my mind – a true safe space”. She visualises her thoughts through words, describing her notebook “a scrabble of disorganised words”. Hence, reflection isn’t just a crucial component to her wellbeing, but also her creative practice. Another key element of her practice is spending time speaking with the audience she intends to design for. Victoria states; “Designing for others is exactly what motivates me to continue to create – to bring a spark of joy into other people’s worlds”. She also loves to be hands on; exploring different colouring techniques such as colouring pencils, watercolour, paint and screen printing.
“I believe inspiration is everywhere, truly!” says Victoria when describing how going for long walks and immersing herself in nature inspires her to create. “We often take for granted the composition of natural and man-made beauty but the contrast between fluidity and structure brings texture and life to our cities.” This is exactly what inspires her shape artworks, as well as reading non-fiction books about neuroscience, psychology, future technology, and inspiring autobiographies. “Learning new topics opens up new doors and possibilities,” says the designer.
Looking to the future, Victoria aims to “comfortably sit as an emotional designer”. For her, this means designing toolkits and running workshops about emotional well being at schools. She hopes to become an ambassador for a mental health organisation, with a focus on creatives’ mental wellbeing. She concludes; “It would be a dream come true to not only design digital, but also physical experiences, such as art installations and murals. So long as there is a space for me to create work that brightens a stranger’s day that is all that matters to me”.
