London-based artist Alexandra Ramirez works across editorial illustration, painting, print design, printmaking, motion graphics, and animation. With a penchant for both traditional and digital media, which she often mixes together, Alexandra’s style is energetic with vibrant colours and dynamic line and shape.
“Be like water, my friend”; a quote by Bruce Lee, is what was stuck in Alexandra’s head while working on her latest series of prints. “It’s a sense of reflective solitude, a cherished loneliness, so we can actually take a breath and enjoy the stillness… It’s a reminder whatever the challenges, you are able to overcome, adapt and transform,” says the artist.
In the series Alexandra explores both the coercive confinement caused by the COVID19 pandemic, and the voluntary isolation from the toxicity of the outer world. “It’s a feeling, quite compulsive that tells you to be alone and stay alone for a while. It’s a moment when you need to go in and see inside yourself before you return to the world transformed and cleaned. It’s a step towards yourself you need to take so you learn your own lessons and continue your path”.
She started the series with painting on small canvases which she later transformed into digital illustrations. “I wanted them to feel more real and not as flat as digital colours usually appear” describes Alexandra. Aiming to “apply simplicity”, she chose a limited colour palette and textured brushes when creating the works; “I wanted them to feel like a print with these tiny imperfections that make printmaking so special”.
The series is giclee printed on Hahnemuehle German etching 310 gsm.
