Genaro Martinez Medina

Illustrator, visual communicator, and designer, Genaro Martinez Medina, looks to his Mexican culture for inspiration for his richly coloured illustrated works. Originally from Mexico City, he came to the UK to study Illustration at University of West England. Often including visual metaphors within his works, Genaro powerfully tells stories through single images. Alongside his heritage culture, worldwide issues and his new surroundings in the UK also feed into his designs.

Genaro develops his work in a traditional way, beginning with conceiving ideas in an analogue format in his sketchbook. His go-to tools include paper of various colours, posca pens, gouache, pastels, and waxed crayons. He then takes this to the digital realm, where he combines multiple layers in Photoshop, resulting in multidisciplinary works that are abundant with texture and depth.Recently, Genaro has been working with a local charity, Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees, providing imagery for their newsletter and conceptual work to complement their articles. This has provided the opportunity for him to demonstrate his own passions and beliefs, displaying his own point of view through his illustrations.

With a big love for editorial Illustration, these projects tend to take up most his time. However, Genaro is also working on expanding into the realms of packaging illustration, advertising, and food illustration, and has recently started exploring the concept of Artists’ books which have looked at his own story.
