Inky Dog Studio was founded in August 2018 by Jane Constable after she decided to become a full-time printmaker. Her work is predominantly created using the linocut relief printmaking technique, using traditional linoleum and high quality carving tools by Pfeil and Flexcut. Jane is largely inspired by her love for nature and animals, particularly birds, which have been important to her since early childhood. Influence for her work also comes from her interest in certain art and design movements from the 20th century, such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco, elements of which are evident in her prints.
Printmaking has been a focus for Jane ever since she majored in Printed Textile Design for her degree course at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in the early 1980s. Whilst studying she mainly worked with silkscreen and stencil printing techniques. Although, like so many others she dabbled with linocut as a student, it wasn’t until much later that she began teaching Art and Design to children, and found herself becoming addicted to the medium.
Jane’s projects are mostly self-directed, and the work she produces is in response to an initial idea that may develop into a sequence, or as a one-off. Occasionally she works on dog-related commissioned pieces, which is where her Inky Dog Studio branding originated from. As an active user on Instagram, Jane has had the opportunity to get involved in various projects. “This is really interesting and takes my printmaking journey along paths I wouldn’t necessarily have followed” describes the printmaker.
Her most exciting recent purchase has been an A2 lino printing press from Woodzilla. Having this press will enable Jane to increase the scale of her prints, creating exciting future possibilities for her career as a relief printmaker. Motivated by the passion to develop her craft, she hopes to continue improve a little more with each day that passes.
