Savvas Verdis is a London-based rubber stamp artist who creates technically and aesthetically beautifully crafted works. With connotations of authority, the rubber stamp is perfect medium for him to play, enabling him to ridicule and take a tongue-in-cheek approach to politics. Savvas puts as much emphasis on the stamp as on the print, seeing it as equally key to the artwork as a whole. In fact, the stamp could be displayed or labelled as a work of art in itself.
By day, Savvas lectures at the London School of Economics; a world that could be considered in opposition to his output as a rubber stamp artist. Through creating his stamps, he can be more honest and crude about the types of authority that he talks about in more diplomatic ways whilst teaching.
His rubber stamps are made entirely by himself, using CNC machines to carve both the wood (solid beech) as well as cut the rubber (EVA vinyl).
Recently, he has been inspired by artists such as Lee Bae from South Korea, bringing their very bold brush stroke style to his own work. He has brought this influence into his new venture; rubber stamp rolling. Here, he uses a type-based stamp as a sort of continuous paintbrush to paint with letters. He is excited to take this new technique to the streets, plastering his satirical approach to politics and authority on pavements, as well as more traditional large scale prints.
