Veronica Ceci’s ‘Weaving Logic’ Turns Hand-Carved Blocks into a Monumental Wall Print

Austin-based artist Veronica Ceci continues to push the scale of relief printmaking with Weaving Logic, a new site-specific work currently on view at Icosa Gallery in Austin as part of the exhibition Perception Technique with Erin Cunningham.

Measuring around 7 x 10.5 feet, the piece is built from six interlocking hand-carved relief blocks that were printed directly onto the gallery wall by hand 360 times. Each impression acts almost like a pixel, gradually forming a complex visual field through repetition and subtle variation.

Rather than hiding the small shifts and imperfections that occur when printing directly onto architecture, Ceci embraces them. Slight changes in pressure, alignment and surface texture become part of the finished image, allowing the wall itself to influence the work.

Weaving Logic is the latest piece in an ongoing series of wall-sized relief prints Ceci began in 2018. Over time the artist has developed a growing library of carved blocks designed to interlock and expand into large-scale patterns. While the method has also been used in community projects such as the See Change initiative, the gallery works explore a much greater level of structural complexity.

This new set of blocks draws inspiration from the lace-making traditions connected to Ceci’s Italian heritage. The imagery translates the logic of woven threads into graphic form, depicting open weave structures and borders that expand across the wall like an enlarged piece of lace. In doing so, the work highlights the technical sophistication of craft traditions that have often been overlooked or undervalued.

The process also acts as a quiet resistance to the smooth, frictionless surfaces of the digital age.

“I am always on the hunt for willing walls,” Ceci says. “As a retired Master Printer, my relationship to the medium has shifted over time, but the promise it holds of bottomless elaboration keeps me coming back.”
