Created in 2013 by senior fashion lecturer Jacqui McAssey, GIRLFANS is a project documenting female football fans with the intention “to give female football supporters visibility and a sense of belonging in football culture”. People of Print Member Dotto was commissioned to design it’s sister project GIRLFANS UNTOLD; a publication featuring the experiences and recollections of nine life-long fans.
“It’s been so good to rep older supporters. Women who are often overlooked by their club, ignored by merch designers, essentially missing from history…” states the GIRLFANS creator.
The bespoke wordmark created for GIRLFANS UNTOLD was inspired by the shapes and lines associated with the game through flags, markings and shirts. The colour palette reflects the fades and colour gradients of the original photography and the size of the publication is a nod to old football programmes. The simple, bold, colourful editorial was intended to feel like something different and ensure the fascinating stories of the nine women were the main focus.
