MicorriZine – A fanzine dedicated to the world of lichen

Micorri-Zine – Appunti visivi di simbiosi mutualistica (A fanzine dedicated to the world of lichen) is a project curated by Francesca Habe, created as number 14 in the FranZine_Milano series. Designed in the summer of 2023 in collaboration with Federico Blu di Prussia, the publication was conceived as a reflection on the world of lichens. By probing specimens from all over the world and combining them with short suggestive texts, the zine examines numerous botanical species and the underlying links between the fungal component and the plant world.

The printed publication was created using numerous techniques that enhance the tactile and physical aspect of the paper; combining the materiality of the editorial product with the living beings it evokes. The texts and images were printed in xerography on 90 gr orange Favini Rismaluce paper. This has been combined with two-colour silk-screen printing on Fabriano Moss 120 gr paper, and a three-colour Risograph on water-blue straw paper 180 g. It was then hand-bound with orange thread after the printing phases were carried out in Milan in August 2023 by Press Press.

Alongside the limited edition printed in 99 copies numbered in Arabic numerals and the 21 copies made as artist’s proofs, thematic bookmarks were also made to accompany the zine. The bookmarks were printed on Favini Crush Cacao 250 gr., a paper which was made by Federico Fusetti as part of their personal project Federico Blu di Prussia. The logo was imprinted with a manual punch next to a label with the colours of the edition, as well as a hand-printed linocut that bears a stamp that presents the colophon of the fanzine.

As well as the Zine, Press Press also printed a series of Risograph postcards on straw paper with the same inks present in the edition. The postcards were printed in three colours in 120 numbered copies and include an additional illustration dedicated to the centrality of mosses and lichens in the evocative dimension of the Japanese Zen concept.

The entire project, as well as being part of the “SACRESELVE” festival, was at the centre of numerous events and markets in Milan and Vicenza, including Camaleonte MarketThe Art ChapterGomma Festival, and Lumen Festival. It was also hosted by independent bookstores such as SpazioB **K as well as inside La Tana Studio by Giorgia Oldano. The artistic journey which was divided into fanzines, bookmarks, and postcards has broadened the artists’ focus on technique, research, and suggestions connected to this moment of reflection and profitable exchange.
