Based in London, The Cameron Twins are a collaborative artist duo of identical twins who explore a diverse range of artistic mediums, including screen print, digital montage, photography, casting, sculpture, and installation. Abigail and Phebe make use of vivid colours and a child-like naive aesthetic with chaotic ensembles of images working playfully, exploring ideas surrounding childhood imagination and dreams within their practice.
The duo usually work in very small edition, hand-pulled, original screen prints and mixed media artworks, as well as larger scale 1/1 canvas pieces. Their editions range from between 6 and no bigger then 15. Screen printing is at the core of their practice, and they prepare and expose all of their screens themselves and print together, hand-pulling the screens at the same time. They tell us; “The partnership involved with preparing our equipment, and pulling the screens together in unison, is what allows us to create our artwork and ensure our shared artistic vision runs throughout our entire process.” The pair use screen printing in different ways, often in an experimental and playful way, combining the process within mixed media artwork and alongside hand-cut paper stencils. Alongside their printmaking practice, Abigail and Phebe hand-make silicone moulds for their small sculptures, and hand-cast them with plastic which they dye using fluorescent pigment.
Since graduating from a BA in Fine Art course together in summer 2021, the twins have exhibited in 17 exhibitions overall, including 15 group shows and 2 solo exhibitions, with another 3 solo shows planned between now and the end of 2024. They have been featured in magazines such as Hunger Magazine, Italian magazine La Repubblica, Hypebae, and Creative Boom.
In their art practice, the duo love to play around and collaborate, always driven by a shared vision. “Though, at the start, it can get tricky as we try to sort and express each other’s ideas (even as twins, we can’t read each other’s minds!),” comment the duo. Collecting materials is a large part of their process and they take their time gathering all kinds of inspiration; old family photos, childhood drawings, toys, pop-culture icons, favourite TV characters, vintage signs, retro packaging, and inspiring images from everyday life.
The twins are currently experimenting with scaling up their work; “So far, the scale of our work has been limited by what we are able to fit inside our small home studio and car, we would love to experiment making some larger scale works… hopefully for our upcoming solo shows next year.” They currently use shared workshop facilities, so the dream would be to have their own studio space (with a coffee machine, of course).
They have just released a limited edition of 15 prints and 5 embellished artist proofs with Art Republic, as part of their campaign in line with the Barbie movie release (although Barbie has always featured historically in their work). The pair also have some exciting print releases and charity releases coming up soon with Enter Gallery and West Contemporary.
