Yasmine Charlotte creates block prints on paper, inspired by the natural world, animals, and daily life. Her work is very personal, like a diary at times, presenting a narrative that reflects her passion for books and stories.
Choosing not to go to university after studying Fine Art A-level at college in Hastings, instead Yasmine decided to work with horses, hence their regular occurrence in her prints. After suffering from an injury, she was working as a painter producing lots of watercolours, and taught herself to block print after seeing a kit at a local art shop.
The printmaker starts her pieces by analysing the blank lino block, as if she doesn’t already have a vague plan, this can help her work out a design within the dimensions of the block she’s going to carve. Yasmine uses either soft cut or hessian backed lino, depending on what she’s working on, preferring oil based inks as “they are so much easier to work with and the finish is so much better“. She also adores using Pfeil and Japanese Powergrip tools to bring her textured and colourful prints to life.
Yasmine is currently working on designing wallpaper and textiles for soft furnishings, as well as a sustainable clothing line. Going forward she hopes to run printmaking courses to pass on the knowledge she has gained.
