Legendary Swedish furniture manufacturer IKEA have collaborated with Finnish design house Marimekko on a new limited collection. Launching on March 1st, BASTUA is inspired by nature and the self-care rituals of the Nordic sauna. This is the very first time that Marimekko have designed prints exclusively for another brand. The 26-piece collection, which includes furniture, glassware, and textiles, showcase vibrant prints that encapsulate the simple and aesthetic beauty of Nordic nature.
The patterns that form the collection are inspired by the Nordic sauna and wellness culture, with prints that are reminiscent of rhubarbs that sometimes grow next to sauna huts in Finland, and graphic yet relaxed stripes representative of the slats that playfully lie side-by-side on sauna benches.
Highlights from the collection include bold and colourful kimonos, glassware that represents the ripplying water of lakes, and solid birch furniture that is nod to Nordic design with its clear lines and simple yet functional design.
The collection aims to spread joy and bring relaxation, or as Marimekko designer Maija Louekari puts it; “You can have a piece of Nordic happiness with you, even without a sauna.”
