Since the beginning in 2018, Chemistry Publishing have worked with artists to create and release books, magazines, and prints. Last month, they released their 42nd collaborative project. Besides the projects they release in collaboration, Chemistry Publishing also do commissioned work as they have their own print shop where they can create different products. The Poole is the first Riso printed hardcover book that they have printed and bound in their studio in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, and it is also the first graphic novel created by Hanneke Rozemuller.
Hanneke approached the studio after seeing the first first graphic novel that Chemistry Publishing produced in collaboration with Micha Huigen last year. The Poole was Hanneke’s graduation work, and she wanted to show it to a wider audience. Chemistry comment; “Given the work Hanneke had already put into it, we had to make something special for feel”. This ended up being a Riso printed hand-bound book that they printed and bound in their own studio in an edition of 250.
The Poole tells the story of the Forest Poole, where the rules are simple; No-one initiates any activity that isn’t verified by the leader. When Populus successes the old leader, things work out a bit differently and years of tradition fall apart. The publication is exemplary of Hanneke’s aesthetic and approach, striking a delicate balance between self-reflection and lightheartedness. Through her work, she invites viewers to ponder life’s enigmas and find their way back to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
The Poole has now been out for two months, and the team are working on distribution, stockists, and selling through their webshop.
