Flycatcher Press is a printmaking and letterpress studio run by Phoebe Todd-Parrish in Toronto, Canada. Phoebe became interested in printmaking during her undergraduate studies, when she took her first course in traditional stone lithography at York University (Canada). Quick to take every other print class available to her, she found that screen printing was the most satisfying due to its versatility and speed.
Phoebe went on to complete her MA in English at York U, followed by a Masters of Fine art in Printmaking at the University of Alberta. Here, she continued to work with a variety of print techniques in combination with other mediums such as animation and sculpture.
While in Edmonton, Phoebe became interested in letterpress printing after assisting at a local print studio. She fell in love with the tactility of designing and printing by hand with movable type. Letterpress seemed like the “missing piece” to her practice as she had always been interested in artists books, and her work frequently combined text and image. Phoebe has since learned more about letterpress printing from the generosity of new friends in the letterpress community.
After years away in Alberta and then a brief stint living in Australia, Phoebe is now back home in Toronto, with a dedicated studio space that she has outfitted with as much type as possible, and a collection of presses both big and small (and incredibly heavy). This includes a Chandler and Price Pilot, Challenge Proof press, and “Big Blue”; a gloriously frakensteined etching press with no discernible manufacturer.
Flycatcher Press is located in one of the last remaining industrial buildings in Toronto’s Queen West neighbourhood. Here, Phoebe produces fine art prints, cards, posters, notebooks, and bespoke stationery. Currently, she is also working her way through a series of linocut prints based on Toronto Diners: past, present, and endangered. Phoebe loves sharing the joy of printmaking with others, teaching as a sessional instructor at academic institutions and local studios. Flycatcher Press will soon host a number of one-on-one and small group workshops on-site as well.
