Gataller owes its name to the conjunction of two words; “gata”, which is translated as cat in English, and “workshop”, meaning atelier. The studio was born back in 2016 in the city of La Paz at 3600 meters above sea level at the foot of the “illimani”. With little prior planning and with the desire to make graphic art, Valeria Delgadillo (sculptor and illustrator) and Tulusito (designer and illustrator) came together and embarked on a journey of creation with little knowledge, a squeegee, and a screen printing claw purchased secondhand.
The pair’s first impressions were stickers and ink patches created from their own designs and illustrations. Little by little, they started making printed shirts and marvelled at the versatility and nobility of screen printing. Valeria and Tulusito attended more specialised courses in Lima, Peru to raise their level in screen printing, always striving to learn and improve their offering,
From the beginning, art and craft fairs were the platforms through which they showed their work. Slowly, Gataller increased their output and opened up to providing a printing service. They went on to work with many great designers and illustrators from their country, including Eloyza Paz, Daniela Rico, Lorena Castellon, Kaski art, and Leo Pantoja, as well as rock bands such as La Logia, La Chiva, and Los Tocayos.
In 2018, designer and graphic artist Victor Pinto joined the pair and together they delved into editorial production. To date, Gataller have 3 published poems with covers made entirely in serigraphy designed and illustrated by themselves.
This year is set to be a very promising one for the workshop as Giorgio Gamarra, a great engraver and graphic artist, joins the studio. They conclude; “Our biggest project is to continue on this life path of screen printing and move forward with the humility that always characterises us.”
