Founded a few years back by husband and wife duo Chris and Dani, Gilfalo Art Design is an art and design studio operating with a focus on reduction printing. Their passion for printing started with a collection of concert posters, and has been growing ever since. Chris and Dani now have a small studio based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they spend time drawing, printing, teaching the basics of linoleum block printing to a wide array of people, and “creating just about anything that makes us smile”.
You can find the pair rolling Caligo Safe Wash Inks almost daily in their studio. They currently print with a Blicks 999 which they have named Dorothy, after Chris’ mother; “She had a flair about her, much like our art”.
Chris and Dani have just finished up an 8 x 10, 2 colour print. Entitled Northern Lights, the print is based off the spectacular views of the Aurora Borelis. The piece was printed on Legion Hot Press papers and in an open edition. Recently, they also created a concert poster for the incredible folk/Americana band Dead Horses, incorporating imagery of the actual venue where the gig was taking place. This was Gilfalo’s first official concert print, and the duo are looking forward to working with this band and others in 2022. The pair also regularly work with real life photographs. With a degree in Photography, Dani helps capture photos that they can then turn into block prints.
“Teaching has become a wonderful to avenue for us,” says Chris. Gilfalo host a weekly 4 person class where they focus on the fundamentals of linoleum block printing. The students range from 14 – 65 years old. “It’s wonderful to see the happiness that printmaking brings to them. It’s our passion to make others smile all while learning to be creative,” describes Chris.
“We just want to keep creating fun prints focused on making us and others smile,” conclude the duo. You can find their art online, at local galleries, in their studio, and at pop up marketplaces around Milwaukee.
