The Liquorice Press’ love affair with print pushes them beyond the ordinary. Embracing both traditional and cutting-edge techniques, their team produce exceptional printed pieces for their clients, turning great ideas into beautiful reality. Everyone at Liquorice has a passion for quality, priding themselves on the outstanding quality of their design, the unrivalled quality of print, and a superior quality of service. They thrive on variety, offering services covering everything from design for print, web design and traditional letterpress, to the latest technologies in small and large format digital printing.
Print has always been in the blood of Liquorice’s founder, Robin Escott. He describes “My Grandparents were Bible folders and my parents were book binders. I was involved in print from a very early age with a long family history with this industry. At my Mother and Fathers print finishing business (Book Binding, Mailing, all types of commercial print finishing) I would be a school holiday worker from the age of 12 and spent my early life running around my parent’s office/works talking to the printers, print finishers, book binders, etc.” This sparked Robin’s passion for print, and inspired him to go on to study Graphic Communications, Printing and Print Finishing. After graduating, Robin worked for various printers covering, Sheet Fed, Web Fed, Large Format, newspaper production, and magazine cover production. Whilst taking a break from his career to travel the world, Robin came across a street market in New York, and discovered a man producing letterpress name cards on an old foot powered platen. He comments; “I fell in love with the look and impression it gave”.
On his return to the UK, he decided to set up his own business producing quality stationery, as most of the printers he had worked for previously had not offered this service. From this love for the print process, The Liquorice Press was born in 2003. Initially set up in a garage, with a conventional single colour litho press, Robin and his team then moved to premises in Whitney Road, Basingstoke. A desire to draw on the artisan aspects of print, which had been largely forgotten in modern print processes, began the letterpress journey, with the acquisition of a Heidelberg Platen 10×15 in 2006.
Today, The Liquorice Press offer services across letterpress, litho, digital, foiling, embossing, die cutting, edge painting, duplex, gilding, special finishing, large format, and design. Over the years, they have had the honour of collaborating with some great names in the business on everything from book designs to marketing literature. More recently, they have been working closely with some beautiful collector edition playing cards as part of a Kick Starter project. Robin describes; “It has been a real privilege to produce these stunning designs which have been foiled and embossed. It is an ever-changing schedule here at The Liquorice Press and we try our hand at many projects.”
Liquorice currently have a very exciting project in the pipeline which they will be launching this winter; a collection of stunning designs and beautiful stationery for their new online shop. They are also working on a campaign to launch a bespoke letterpress business card. These will be limited in quantity and released to a set number of lucky individuals on a first come first served basis. Liquorice now also have their own in-house design team, so get in touch with your ideas!
