Julia Humfress, founder of Word Words, began her printmaking journey whilst studying Graphic Design at The London College of Printing (University of the Arts). After graduating, Julia went on to work as a designer and art director for Harrods of Knightsbridge and Condé Nast Publications, and also as a freelancer for major retailers, property companies and magazine houses.
However, her love for all things analogue led to the acquisition of a collection of vintage wood type, initiating the set up Wood Words Letterpress Printmaking Studio in London. Every part of the printmaking process is done by hand by Julia in the studio. Prints are created on a large relief press enabling her to have a versatile workflow, and create a softness in terms of texture and finish. Most of her practice is experimental and conceptual, and her most recent pieces can be bound in the Wood Words Letterpress Look Book, which gives a glimpse into letterpress and the inky work of wood type.
Julia enjoys both the constraints and the freedom that letterpress provides. Compared to digital design which is immediate and mainly commercially driven, the process of letterpress printing is a more measured and steady discipline, involving continual problem-solving and innovation.
Printmaker, Julia, and the studio dog Bob, are always keen to welcome other designers and printmakers to the studio for printing and collaborations. Julia believes that sharing knowledge and skills is vital to ensure continued creativity and growth.
