Pittsburgh-based artist Matt Gold brings vintage Polaroids from the 1970s and 80s into a new life through digital art, stepping inside the lives of strangers and asking what we see when we look at someone else’s history.
There is a particular intimacy to a Polaroid. The format was designed for the personal, for the moment kept rather than shared, and the images that survive from the 1970s and 80s carry that quality intact. Faces at parties, families in kitchens, friends in clothes that date them precisely. Matt Gold has spent years curating over a hundred of these images, drawn to the world each one briefly opens up.
“I enjoy looking at the lives of strangers,” he says, “and wondering where are they now.”
Unseen America is a mixed media collection that takes these found Polaroids and transforms them through digital art, bringing vintage photographic objects into a contemporary visual context without dissolving what made them worth finding in the first place. The images span the decade of Gold’s own birth and move forward into the 1980s, a timeframe that gives the series a coherent cultural texture: the fashion, the colour, the environments and the mood all belong to the same era, and together they amount to something closer to a collective portrait than a curated archive. A history lesson in one shot, as Gold puts it.
The project operates on a quiet ethical premise. These are photographs of real people, taken in private moments, by someone who knew them. Gold steps inside those moments as a stranger and invites the viewer to do the same, framing that act of looking as a form of wonder rather than voyeurism. The digital transformation extends the life of images that were never meant to outlast their original occasion, and in doing so asks what we owe to the people caught in them and what we gain from being allowed to see.
Gold is based in Pittsburgh, where his practice moves across photography, digital art and music. His work has been featured in numerous publications and journals. Recent collaborations include a 2023 Pride campaign with Jones Soda, and he was part of Beeple’s Election Night Exhibition.
