Originally beginning as a design experiment, Thomas Wirtz’s By the way: typography and material behaviour has intelligently evolved into a modular system involving two main components, the self-made typography produced via 3D printing and the variety of physical processes which strikingly react with the internet jargon abbreviations. The short film guides the viewer through the multiple processes, examining the immersive behaviour of each as the reactions beautifully contrast in colour against the striking block colour backgrounds which consume the internet jargon mould prior to their reveal via texture.

Decorated in a minimal monochrome palette, the power of effect is dependent on the contrast between textures, as ripples of water illuminate against the enveloping black background and thus reveal the enigmatic typography hidden within the darkness.

Deliberately using traits of digital applications to then transform them to analogue media, the experimental typography creations allow an analogue simulation of time dilation, otherwise realised digitally and thus ironically referenced through the 3D ‘take your time’ font which showcases the specific material slowly losing its way within the typographic mould maze.
