Sabine van Rooij is a printmaker based in Almere, in the Netherlands. She predominantly works with the medium of linocut, and often creates block prints using more than one layer.
Her passion for print was ignited when she visited a temporary exhibition on M.C. Escher when she was young; “he’s been my idol and inspiration for printmaking ever since“. After completing a Graphic Design course, and participating in an online class about entrepreneurship, Sabine began to share more of her work with the world. “As soon as I started to receive amazingly positive feedback, I started thinking about making more out of my printmaking hobby… that’s when I started setting up an Etsy shop and a website” explains the printmaker. It is the positive feedback that Sabine receives that she thrives on, and she is enjoying the whirlwind of changes and new challenges which are coming her way as she continues on her printmaking journey.
Sabine is keen to learn more about all methods of printmaking and constantly develop her technique. Mostly practising linocut, she has recently started to experiment with screen printing, and is currently partaking in a course on Riso printing.
Inspiration comes from everywhere for Sabine, from botanical and celestial imagery, to portraiture, she always aims to try new things. She concludes; “If there’s anything that I’ve learned these past years, it is that life is way too short to not do what you love, so I decided to do more of what I love and less of the things I don’t“.
