Anne Albert an illustrator living and working near Berlin, Germany. She studied Visual Communication at the famous Bauhaus University in Weimar, and at Ecole des Beaux-Arts Toulouse. Mainly working for clients in the publishing industry, and in the fields of culture, advertising and politics, Anne is known her editorial illustrations for articles in newspapers and magazines, as well as developing striking visuals for brands and cultural institutions.
Her aesthetic is defined by her strong and reduced selection of colours, geometrical designs, and edgy characters, which depict abstract shapes, optical illusions, birds, plants, and women. The illustrator’s work is distinguished by a strong empathetic visual concept, a love for abstraction and minimalism, as well as a pleasure for playing and creating.
Besides her commissioned work, Anne enjoys exploring printing techniques including screen printing, etching, and Riso printing. Her visual language is inspired by American graphic designers such as Saul Bass, Bauhaus artists Gunda Stözl and Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, and illustrators from the former GDR including Elizabeth Shaw and Manfred Bofinger.
Taking inspiration from everyday life, daily struggles, and everyday pleasures, Anne explores her own overthinking through her artworks. Yet, she also likes to show things, shapes, and thoughts that are mood lifting; “I believe in the power of creating an artwork for good, to lift someone’s mood or to raise awareness for things such as feminism or climate change“.
Always with a sketchbook to hand to jot down notes and pictures that come to her mind, Anne begins her working process by making rough sketches in pencil. It is these sketches that she later translates into digital artworks or prints. Currently, she is enjoying experimenting with Riso printing in collaboration with Berlin-based studio We Make It, and Anne is particularly loving the resulting texture and colour palette that Riso printing gives to her creations.
Anne is looking forward to creating more artworks and prints that expand and develop her practice, as well as exploring other forms of handcrafting including ceramics and weaving, with the ultimate dream of building her own small printing studio.
